   Summer Intensive Workshop!
2010 Summer Intensive Workshop Summary

MainStage Academy of Dance Summer Intensive ‘2010 is a 10-week accelerated dance program. Each week participants will take classes in Vaganova Russian Ballet, Rommett Floor Barre, and en Pointe Techniques as well as Modern dance and Urban Hip-Hop. Participants will have specific skill lessons focusing on turns and jump variations. The study of choreography, theatrical make-up, and stage production will be introduced and featured in a fun-filled Summer Workshop ending performance!

Curriculum:

Vaganova Ballet: This precise technique and system of instruction is particular to when to teach what, how long to teach, and in what amount. The Vaganova method focuses on back flexibility, arm gracefulness, strength, and endurance for ballet.

Pointe Variations: MainStage uses RAD syllabus, where dancers are first taught to "roll-through" from flat to half pointe to pointe and down again, and Russian technique in which the dancer springs directly from flat onto pointe.

The Zena Rommett Floor-Barre: This technique incorporates innovative dance movements along with anatomical principles of alignment in a pure technique of solid placement.  Without the pull of gravity, correct alignment and movement become part of the dancer's muscular memory.  The physical structure is centered, lengthened, and strengthened and tension is released maximizing turnout and extension.

Lyrical Dance: A cross between ballet and jazz. We use motion to interpret music and express emotion. Choreography is set to the lyrics in music and typically uses soft, expansive movement that is fluid and graceful to convey a story. A solid, ballet-based technique is an essential component of this advanced style of dance.

Urban Hip-Hop: Our high-energy Hip-Hop program with its Urban street flare features elements of locking, popping, waving, and breaking with a strong emphasis on improvisational “free style” movement.

New for 2010 - Dancer’s Nutrition (Optional for levels 1 & 2) The benefits of good nutrition are numerous, and even more so for dancers. Constant training takes a toll on muscles, joints and bones. Good eating habits can improve the recovery from such strain, and even assist with lean muscle growth and soft tissue repair. Eating the right foods can increase energy, focus and concentration. Finding the proper balance of nutrients not only prevents fatigue and injury, but also supports a long healthy career in dance.

New for 2010 - Flexi-Stretch Class: Dancers looking to improve extension, obtain a higher arabesque or finally have that full split. This is the class! Originally designed by a professional dancer for use in some of the world's top ballet companies The Flexi-stretch class combines traditional stretching with the benefits of elastic resistance. Unlike Therabands and other “static” stretching aids, which risk injury by forcing the user’s body into the stretch position. The Flexistretcher used in the Flexi-Stretch class utilizes an elastic center strap allowing the body to find a healthy level of extension. The elastic resistance also challenges the muscles within the position, helping to build strength and increase your range of motion.

New for 2010 - Pilates Class (Optional) Not only do dancers need superior core strength, balance and control but they also need to properly activate their core in harmony with the rest of their body while maintaining breath control. Dancers have to accomplish this utilizing progressive dance movement particular to their technique to achieve their goals of dancing to their fullest potential. The benefits of Pilates Training for Dancers include: Increased core strength, balance & coordination elimination of muscle gripping and decreased joint & ligament stress. Director Bray is pleased to offer these exciting new classes to his summer intensive programs.

Stage Production: These lessons will focus on theater and stage production. Students will touch on a variety of stage techniques including; Music Production, Costume Design, Set Design, Stage Lighting, and Choreography. One dancer’s overall production-work will be selected for our summer ending workshop performance.

Theatrical Makeup: Class Makeup has always played an important role in theater, whether in a small play or large production ballet. Makeup can be used to transform any dancer, actor, or singer into a character. This class is designed to give each student a basic knowledge of theatrical makeup.
